An East Des Moines staple for over 3 decades, the Iowa Beef Steakhouse is all about one thing, and they do that one thing very well: meat. Carnivores will have no problem choosing from a variety of cuts of meat, while those with smaller appetites have some very tasty sandwiches to choose from, and a generous salad bar to boot. But today was about one thing, and one thing only: trying their newest addition, a hamburger. I had a chance to talk to the owner, Will Kellogg while waiting for my meal, and he was very confident I was about to have the best burger in Des Moines. After trying one for myself, I have a hard time arguing with him.
I ordered mine up loaded with a couple hearty strips of bacon and a nice melted slice of pepperjack cheese, and was a little hard to get my mouth around. My first bite gave me the full, juicy flavor of a good burger, but without the grease that usually accompanies such a meal. The bacon was flavorful and crispy, the cheese gave the burger just the right amount of kick, and the veggies were fresh and crispy, giving me the full effect I was looking for. I was amazed that such a juicy burger came out with very little to no grease. You can definitely tell that this is fresh, ground in house meat, not a frozen brick patty. And at $10 for the basic burger and a side, it's head and shoulders above any chain restaurant burger I've ever had. I'm more than excited to come back to try their Steak Philly, but it's going to be hard to pass up another shot at one of their burgers. Maybe even impossible.
