Nestled in the heart of Historic Valley Junction in West Des Moines, Cooper's on 5th is a cozy comfort food spot you definitely need to check out. I walked in for lunch & was pleasantly surprised to see the place full of people, but was able to quickly grab a seat and get to my favorite activity: eating.
I was feeling particularly peckish, so upon a close look at their specials for the day, their meatlover's pizza eggroll caught my eye. The eggroll was exploding with meat & sauce, doused with a healthy sprinkling of parmesan to boot. Perfect way to stave off my hunger as I perused their menu.
For me, meatloaf can be really hit or miss. Either it's a dry, crumbly mess of a hamburger, or it's completely drenched in tomato sauce OR even worse, ketchup (shudder). But I was presented with a scrumptious looking sandwich on nicely toasted bread, with plenty of cheese (there is no such thing as too much cheese), & a nice looking tomato glaze that I am completely envious of. I need to step up my
glaze game, as this had a perfect consistency: nice & tangy flavor without being anything close to ketchup, & helped the actual meatloaf really standout. And what a meatloaf is was. Never dry, with a perfect mix of their Cajun spices & onions to spice up that traditional meatloaf taste with a kick. With such a good meatloaf, I'm very excited for a return trip to try some of their other entrees.
While I was being drawn in by the sandwich, the bartender was mixing up a delightfully colorful looking sangria, & with nothing better to do that afternoon, I threw caution to the wind & decided to try one. Super fruity & sweet (but not too sweet), it was a surprisingly good compliment to my meatloaf.
I would definitely recommend Cooper’s for a quick bite, business or pleasure, but I think it's makes for a perfect date spot. Great location, great atmosphere for conversation, & you'll definitely get bonus points for the excellent food & drink at a place your date has probably never been to. Next date of mine is getting treated to Cooper's. Any takers, ladies?
